Community Over Competition: Why Collaboration is Key in the Hair and Beauty Industry

I cannot begin to tell you how important the above statement is. Especially for business owners within our industry. Everybody needs their support village. Like a new mum needing a mother’s group. Or The Walking Dead, where you just need to find a crew and stick together to stay alive! We show up every day, to support our staff and our clients but who are we turning to on the days we want to burn it all down?

The hair and beauty industry is known for its creativity and innovation. But historically our industries have been competitive, and sometimes a little toxic, with salons and stylists vying for clients and accolades. But a movement is emerging that emphasises the importance of community over competition. And I for one am here for it.

Breaking Down Barriers

Collaboration breaks down barriers between salons and stylists, artists and therapists. Businesses can work together to share knowledge and resources, offering support and encouragement. Creating a stronger sense of community within the industry. This is where the growth happens. Where new partnerships and friendships form. As well as business opportunities that might not have been possible otherwise.

Learn from each other's experiences, the good and the bad. Knowing you are not alone in the tough times and having cheerleaders for when you have a win is invaluable.

Creating a Stronger Industry

Collaboration will help to create a stronger, more cohesive industry. By working together, we can debunk the stigmas of the past and elevate the industry as a whole. Attracting new talent and customers and ensuring continued growth and success. We want the new blood coming through excited and inspired by what their future holds.

How to find your crew

There are lots of ways we can make small steps to creating a community/village/crew! Despite common generalised views, we are not all extroverts within our industry. The idea of putting yourself out there might seem confronting, but start small.

This was our “why” for starting the Salon Rising Podcast. Why wanted to bring your emotional support crew straight to you! So if you want to dip your toe in the community water then feel free to give us a listen.

Social media can also be great. If you like the look of what someone's business is doing, tell them. Drop a comment or DM and be genuine. You get back what you put out to the world. You could start a group chat with fellow business owners you already know. The options are there just take the leap.

Our Salon Rising programs are also a great way to work alongside fellow owners and sole traders. These groups offer collaboration, vulnerability and growth for both you and your business.

Community is where it's at guys. When we come together everybody benefits. So, rise above, spread the love and join the revolution. You won't regret it.

Love and light x
